If Klondike Kate is singing, can the St. Paul Winter Carnival be far behind?

Five women will vie for the honor of Klondike Kate 2013 on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the Prom Center.

Kate is called the Winter Carnival’s “mistress of fun, frivolity and good fellowship.” Contestants will perform as many as three songs in three rounds of competition until a final elimination is made. Candidates will be judged on musical performance, song choice, vocal abilities, costuming, crowd appeal and “authenticity in portraying the real-life character,” Klondike Kate, who charmed miners in the Gold Rush of 1898.

KSTP Eyewitness News’ Jonathan Yuhas and Joy Lim Nakrin will emcee the event.

In addition to the competition, the Klondike Kates are hosting a charity “Gold Rush” at Prom Center. Licensed appraisers will be onsite to accept old gold pieces and jewelry, appraise them at a competitive rate and pay cash to guests on the spot. Profits will go to Memorial Blood Center.

Doors open at 6 p.m.; the festivities start at 6:30. The new Kate will be announced around 9:45 p.m. Prom Center is at 484 Inwood Ave. N., Oakdale. Tickets are $20 at the door, $17 with a Winter Carnival button. For info, go to the Klondike Kate hotline: 651-289-KATE or klondikekates.org.

The Winter Carnival runs from Jan. 24 to Feb. 3.
