The 2018 St. Paul Winter Carnival, which will take place during the Super Bowl in Minneapolis, will expand to 17 days instead of its usual 10 days.

The Winter Carnival will begin Jan. 25 and run through Feb. 10. The preliminary schedule has most of the events occurring on the usual schedule, with the Moon Glow Parade kicking off the carnival on Thursday, Jan. 25, and the Grande Day Parade on Saturday, Jan. 27. The Vulcan Torchlight Parade and Vulcan Victory Dance would move to Saturday, Feb. 10.

Super Bowl LII will be played on Sunday, Feb. 4, at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

In a Thursday email to members of the St. Paul Festival & Heritage Foundation, the group that puts on the carnival, board chairman Chris Danielson said the board has approved the extension.

“We’re excited to have the opportunity to showcase some of the neat things in St. Paul,” Danielson said Thursday.

The 132nd Winter Carnival will feature a massive ice palace, but the location of the frozen structure hasn’t been officially announced.

“We’re looking at several locations,” Danielson said, but he did acknowledge that the state Capitol grounds are under consideration and the Legislature has been approached.

This isn’t the first time the Winter Carnival has been extended, Danielson said. The last time the event featured an ice palace, in 2004, the carnival was expanded.

The first clue for the 2018 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt will be published on Jan. 21.

Winter Carnival events for Feb. 3 and 4 will be announced later. For more information, contact info@spfhf.org.
