The St. Paul Pioneer Press welcomes you to a contest fit for a king (Boreas, that is).

We got our hopes up for a massive, walk-through ice palace at the 2018 St. Paul Winter Carnival, and then drowned our sorrows in vats of bitter office coffee filled with sugar cubes. Say, those sugar cubes look an awful lot like ice blocks used to make the palaces of yore. And you know how we love art made of food around here.

In the spirit of the annual Pioneer Press Peeps diorama contest, we invite you to enter our first-ever Cool Castle Contest.

Make an ice palace/castle of any size using sugar cubes, marshmallows or anything else edible. Your creation can be the Winter Carnival ice palace you were wishing for, a replica of a real royal home or something that comes to you in a dream.

How to enter:

  • Upload a photo of the castle in the form below by 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2018.
  • Include the name, city and contact information of the creator(s) when submitting the photo. You can add comments, anecdotes, artist’s statements, bad puns, descriptions of materials used, challenges overcome or the number of sugar cubes used or consumed.
  • Enter as many castles as you would like.
  • No purchase necessary to win.
  • Questions? Email icecastle@pioneerpress.com.

Ice castle artists will compete for the chance to have their creation viewed on TwinCities.com and in the Pioneer Press on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018, along with $500 in gift cards and a $1000-level ice block for the People’s Ice Palace in their name.

Winners will be chosen by a panel of Pioneer Press employees. Voting for a people’s choice award opens immediately, so submit your entry sooner for a chance for more votes. You may vote for as many entries per day as you like, but only one vote per entry per day.
