Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt Dark Cream Ale by Bad Weather Brewing Company: In case you haven’t heard, the Pioneer Press has its own beer! We have partnered with Bad Weather Brewing Company to create this delicious dark cream ale.

For all you beer nerds, it’s technically a Kentucky Common, a style that originated in Kentucky in the pre-Prohibition era. It’s a quick fermenting beer (mostly because there wasn’t ready access to refrigeration or ice in the South, so longer fermentation or lagering times were not possible) that uses corn as part of the grain bill.

Bad Weather takes the extra step of grinding the corn from whole, dried kernels and cooking them at a lower temperature to get the sugars out, instead of adding the corn to the larger mash. They call it “cereal cooking” because the mash tun filled with the corn looks like you’re stirring a giant kettle of Cream of Wheat.

That extra step gives this beer a lovely creaminess and sweetness, but a moderate amount of American Cluster and Czech Saaz hops round things out nicely. It’s frankly just an easy-drinking, delicious beer that is now available in cans and on tap at the brewery and at participating bars and restaurants.

We at the Pioneer Press love beer, and we are proud to partner with a fellow St. Paul business to bring you something extra delicious to help get you through the winter, and especially the St. Paul Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt.
