Carter Michels’ investigative skills came in handy during last week’s Frostbite Challenge. The Monticello youth found the celebration medallion with the third clue.
“The first clue and the second clue, I really didn’t understand,” Carter said. “The next clue that said, ‘My secret new spot makes me feel safe as can be. I have someone special watching over me.’ made me think, ‘Well, kids like to go play in a park. Someone guarding it could mean a monument of some type.”
Carter, age 14, said he found the Frostbite medallion on Thursday, Jan. 10 in Ellison Park, under the flag pole after following up from a suggestion offered by his Dad, Rodney.
“We looked around the monument for about 15 minutes, and then it was right there near the flag pole,” he said. “”We thought it was amazing that we found it.”
Carter and his Dad took the medallion home and stashed it in a cupboard for safekeeping.
“The next day, my Dad called the Monticello Chamber of Commerce.”
This year’s Frostbite medallion hunt prize was three, $25 Visa Gift cards supplied by event sponsors First Minnesota Bank, RiverWood Bank, and Premier Banks.
“I was pretty happy with that,” Carter said earlier this week. “I think I will spend [the money] on some fishing supplies. I’m kind of a big fisherman. I like to fish a lot.”
Carter participated in Sunday’s Frostbite Challenge Fishing Contest on Pelican Lake.
“I was actually slaying them,” he said, referring to his fishing success. Not big ones, but keepers.” Carter attends Monticello Middle School.
His favorite activities include riding bikes with friends and playing video games. “I feel anybody who wants to get out and explore should do stuff like this. Win, lose or draw, it’s the adventure that’s the big deal,” he said.
