‘Spike’ returns, thanks to sponsors

HUGO - The Citizen is pleased to announce that seven businesses have stepped up to sponsor The Citizen’s 2012 Hunt for the Golden Spike this year.
The Hugo Feed Mill, Hugo Parks Commission, Johnson/Turner Attorneys at Law, Oneka Ridge Golf Course, Postal Credit Union, WSB & Associates and Verizon Wireless Zone are Spike’s official sponsors this year, and will have the 2012 Hugo Good Neighbor Days “Golden Spike” buttons on hand to distribute next week. Buttons are $1 each this year; the money will be donated to the Hugo Good Neighbors Food Shelf.
Spike will be hidden just in time for Hugo Good Neighbor Days on public property in a city park. Shovels will not be required, nor will metal detectors be of any use: Spike is actually made of plastic, painted gold by Galen Carlson of North Country Auto Body, and will be hidden “in plain sight.”
The winner of the treasure hunt will receive an immediate $250 cash prize when their button and “Spike” are turned in. The remaining $750 will be mailed as a check.
All those who purchase buttons this year will also have the opportunity to win additional prizes in a drawing to be held at the Hugo Lions’ awards ceremony at Lions Park on Sunday, June 10, at 4:30 p.m. Button numbers will be drawn at that time; button-holders MUST be present to win.
The first treasure hunt clues will appear in the June 7 issue of The Citizen just in time for the hunt to begin. The official rules are printed on this page.
Be sure to purchase your button and log your button number with the hunt sponsor before supplies run out. Buttons will be available at the following locations:

If the Golden Spike isn’t found by 5 p.m. Sunday, June 10, the $1,000 prize will be donated to the Hugo Good Neighbors Food Shelf.
Grab the kids, leash the dog, and head out for a great weekend at the 2012 Good Neighbor Days celebration at Lions Park—and all the parks in between. Park and open space maps will be made available courtesy of the City of Hugo.
