Winter Carnival officials Saturday announced the winners of this year’s ice carving competitions. This year’s theme for the multiblock and single-block competitions was “Fire and Reign, a New Beginning.”

In the multiblock competition:

• First place: “George and the Dragon,” by Chris Swarbrick, Richfield, Greg Schmotzer, Hastings, and Fred Doyle; second place: “Picture this Minnesota,” by Bob Halverson, Baraboo, Wis., Ray Denzer, Mounds View, and Perry Carlson, Rush City; third place: “Defeating Fire,” by Jim Nadeau, Waterloo, Iowa, James Quast, Long Lake, and Robert Anderson, Inver Grove Heights; fourth place and Carver’s Choice: “Elvice,” by Rob Graham, Minneapolis, Terry Reis, Mediapolis, Iowa, and John Raak, Mendota Heights.

In the single-block competition:

• Power Tool Division: first place: “St. George’s Nightmare,” by Greg Schmotzer, Hastings; second place: “Nothing Mom,” by Rob Graham, Minneapolis; third place: “Reigning Over Fires,” by Ron and Karen Dillavou, Waterloo, Iowa.

• Hand Carve Division: first place: “Cold Dog New Tricks,” by Jim Zupper, St. Paul; second place: “Abstract,” by Abel Ramirez Aguilar, Mexico City; third place: “Winter Wishing Well,” by Jayme Kraft, Newport.

• Artisan Power Tool: first place: “An Ice Move,” by Joseph Christenson, West St. Paul, and Peter Christenson, South St. Paul; second place: “Wildwood,” by Jerry Sarff, Elk River, and April Sicchitand, Chaska; third place: “How to Make a City Pond,” by Eric Rotter, St. Paul.
