The Securian Frozen Half has been frozen in half.

Because of predicted below-zero temperatures, the distance for Winter Carnival Securian Frozen Half-Marathon at 9 a.m. today has been sliced from 13.1 miles to about 6.5, race director Mary Anderson announced Friday.

The 5-kilometer race will go on as scheduled at 9:15 a.m.

“Minus-15 is our threshold for shortening it, and minus-25 is our threshold for canceling it,” Anderson said of the half-marathon, which was also shortened five years ago because of conditions. “We put this protocol in after the last time.”

Anderson said she expects complaints from some of the runners in the longer event, “but we have to consider the safety not only of the runners but of the volunteers.”

The longer race, which will be slightly longer than a 10K, starts and finishes in downtown St. Paul and follows Shepard Road to the turnaround point near I-35E. Entry fee is $35.

Registration will be available from 7:30-8:45 a.m. at the Securian building, on Sixth and Jackson streets in St. Paul.
