Fire and ice come together Saturday on Grand Avenue as the 2010 Winter Carnival buttons are unveiled by Carnival royalty and Vulcans in front of Salut Bar Americain, 917 Grand Ave.

This year’s five buttons, created by St. Paul Pioneer Press illustrator and graphic artist Kirk Lyttle, have their first public airing at 10:30 a.m.

Mayor Chris Coleman will be on hand to help with the big reveal, along with some Klondike Kates and the top folks at the Saint Paul Festival & Heritage Foundation, the group that manages the Winter Carnival. The 124th Winter Carnival runs Jan. 21 through 31 around St. Paul.

Family activities — including free rides on the Vulcans’ fire truck — follow the unveiling.

The revelry wraps up at 1 p.m.

Buttons will be available for sale at the event and later at $5 apiece or $20 for a complete set. Buttons will also be available at Cub Foods, SuperAmerica and other area retailers. They can be ordered online, too, at winter-carnival.com.
