2011 St. Paul Winter Carnival Schedule of Events
The 125th St. Paul Winter Carnival takes place Jan. 27-Feb. 6. In honor of the 125th year, carnival organizers are promoting 125 events under this year’s festival umbrella.
All events take place in the St. Paul area and are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

THROUGH JAN. 25
“An Artful Carnival Tour” at 13 St. Paul restaurants. The tour will follow “Queen of the Snows,” a sculpture by Rabi Sanfo, through bars and restaurants. As the sculpture travels throughout the city, each location will offer specials to those who mention “Winter Carnival.” The sculpture will be auctioned on winter-carnival.com after the promotion. Music in Rice Park: Live entertainment by Minnesota performers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. through the evening on weekends through Feb. 5.
125-foot History Wall in Rice Park: Photographic display of 125 years of carnival carved in ice.
Ice Bar on Rice Park: Taste some of Minnesota’s finest beverages, including Summit Beer and Cannon River Winery’s commemorative “Winter Ice” Winter Carnival wine, outdoors amid the ice carvings. Hours vary Jan. 28-Feb. 5.

“Get Out & Go St. Paul”: Family event brings back the tradition of racing and sports at Lake Phalen. Participate in or observe Nordic ski races, speed skating, ice biking, snowshoe races and skijoring (dogs pulling skiers). Also demonstrations of speed skating, skiing and ski jumping; youth ice fishing; children’s games, 10 a.m.2 p.m.; Boy Scouts Klondike Derby, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. “Riding Lawn Mower Competition,” noon-2 p.m., featuring riding lawn mowers with high-end engines and studded tires racing on a 190-foot track on the lake.
Geocaching all around St. Paul: Participants use GPS receivers and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers called “geocaches.”
Securian Winter Run: Half-marathon, 10K and 5K; 9 a.m., Sixth and Jackson streets (new route and new 10K for 2011).
Ice Carving Competition: Multiblock carving contest ends at 9 a.m., Rice Park.
Institute of Navigation (ION) Satellite Division Autonomous Snow Plow Competition:Students from six colleges and universities from Minnesota, Michigan and Ohio will compete in this inaugural event featuring their robotic, computer-controlled snowplows. Competition Day No. 1 involves creating a straight “I-Shaped” snowfield. 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; West Fourth Street between Market and Washington streets near Rice Park.
Fire & Ice Hockey: Boys tournament, all day at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.

Speed Skating With the Friends of Roseville Oval Foundation: Learn about speed skating from the best skaters and coaches in the area. GottaGoGottaThrow Winter Carnival Disc Sports Festival: This “Frisbee Golf” event is a fundraiser for Second Harvest Heartland. Games start at 9 a.m. at McMurray Field near Como Park.
Snow Sculptures: Sponsored by the Winter Carnival Vulcan Organization at the State Fairgrounds. Public viewing will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. as the competition continues.
Vulcan Coming Out Party (Official Introduction of the 2011 Vulcan Krewe): 10 a.m. (site to be determined).

King Boreas Grande Day Parade: Begins at 2 p.m. at Fifth and Wacouta, continues westbound on Fifth to Washington Street, then to Fourth Street, ending at St. Peter Street. Hot cocoa available afterward in the lobby of the St. Paul Hotel (minimal cost for treats).
Second Annual Beer Dabbler: Due to popular demand, this post-parade event is bigger and better, with 50 local and regional small-batch brews to sample. 3:30-7:30 p.m., Mears Park; ticketed event for ages 21 and older (price includes souvenir miniature beer glass).
Royal Family Day Roller Skating: 5-8 p.m.; Saints North Roller Rink, 1818 Gervais Court, Maplewood; cost to be determined.
