The “Snow Cowboys” team took first place and artists choice awards at the St. Paul Winter Carnival’s Minnesota State Snow Sculpting Competition on Sunday.
Eighteen teams competed in the event Jan. 25-27 at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, hosted by the Vulcans.
The Snow Cowboys’ (Mike Majerus of Rogers, David Ryding of Minneapolis, and Adam Turner of Arden Hills) winning piece was titled “The Big Game” and depicted a full-size bull moose in battle with two wolves. They won $1,000 and the chance to represent Minnesota at the National Snow Sculpting Competition at Lake Geneva, Wis.
Second place and people’s choice went to Sculptors in Sync (Jim Krueger of East Bethel, Jared Trost and Tim Trost of Goodhue) for “Beethoven’s Fifth Lesson”: A piano lesson, teacher and student at an upright piano.
Third place went to the Royal and Supreme Order of Snow and Sand Sculptors and Shovelers (Jon Baller of Stillwater, Joshua Baller of Stillwater and Curt Cook of Cottage Grove for “Puzzled”: A man holding a puzzle piece in front of a puzzle
Sculptures will be on display at the Fairgrounds through the end of the Winter Carnival, Feb. 3.
