The St. Paul Winter Carnival Sled Dog Races won’t make their return this year. Race organizers said Monday, Jan. 28, that the event on Bald Eagle Lake had to be canceled for the lack of snow.

The race was originally set for Jan. 21, then pushed back to the weekend of Feb. 2-3 in hopes of more snow.

The couple of inches that fell Sunday in the Twin Cities weren’t enough to ensure a safe course for the sled dogs, race organizers said.

The races have been absent from the annual festival since the early 1990s. They were scheduled and canceled in 2012 also.
