Once upon a time (as in the 1970s), metal detectors were de rigueur for those searching for the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt medallion -- until the medallion stopped being made of metal. Regardless, hunters have demonstrated resourcefulness, using rakes, spoons and sometimes their own inventions to track down the elusive medallion.
