A dog doesn’t have to be a Corgi to be considered royalty in St. Paul, but he does have to be registered.
Tuesday is the last day to register dogs for the annual crowning of the Canine-King Boreas and Canine-Queen of Snows. Two lucky pups will be instated Feb. 1 at Union Depot’s “Doggie Depot” event.
“It’s a great day to come down to Union Depot, to get out of the cold and enjoy, the excitement of seeing dogs of all shapes and sizes,” said Connie Shaver, spokesperson for the event.
Sponsored by Animal Emergency and Referral Center, Doggie Depot, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is free to dogs and their owners. Dogs must be on leashes.
The 300-foot-long Waiting Room at the Depot will be filled with 20 local pup rescues, a dog-themed marketplace, doga (dog yoga), consultants from Sidewalk Dog, and a pet photographer.
Rescue dogs will be there looking for their forever homes. Those interested in adopting can meet the dogs and get the process started, Shaver said.
The event corresponds to the St. Paul Winter Carnival Jan. 23 through Feb. 2.
More than 518 dogs were entered into the online-voting contest in 2019 with about 5,000 votes cast through its Facebook page. Each winner receives $250 gift card for a local pet care vendor.
