The new St. Paul Winter Carnival’s Canine Queen of the Snows established a firm pawprint with her owner months before she won the title Saturday during Doggie Depot at Union Depot.
Daisy, a 10-month-old Australian Cattle Dog mutt, was chosen after the annual dog-focused event went online this year. Daisy’s owner, Alexis Hill, who lives in Lowertown St. Paul, rescued the dog from Matty’s Heart & Soul Animal Rescue in Minneapolis. Hill had just moved from Ohio to St. Paul, and decided she needed a companion to help her adjust to a new town during a pandemic.
“I took her home with me the day I met her,” Hill told the Doggie Depot folks. “When moving to a new city during COVID, it was super helpful to have a companion like Daisy. I can go out and explore with her and it’s really great that I get to share all these new experiences with her.”
Daisy is so special to Hill that she now volunteers at the animal rescue organization.
“Daisy loves the attention of everyone looking at her,” Hill said about her pup’s crowning glory, “and hopefully this can help rescue dogs in general get a bit more exposure. It’s a great route to go when you want to get a pet.”
There were 30 dog nominees in the online contest. Doggie Depot is a Winter Carnival event that usually brings canine-centered activities to Union Depot. It was a virtual event this year. For more info, go to uniondepot.org.
