Treasure seekers who plan to join the 2022 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt can order an important piece of gear now. Of course, they’ll want warm clothes, flashlights and digging tools, but in order for the finder win the full $10,000 prize, they’ll need an official Commemorative Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt Medallion.

The medallion is $10 (includes shipping) and will be sold online only at twincities.com/treasurehunt.

There are three parts to the full $10,000 prize:

  • The Treasure Hunter who follows the clues and locates the buried treasure will call the number on the Pioneer Press Medallion for info on how to qualify for the $2,500 initial cash prize.
  • For an additional $2,500, the hunter who found the treasure needs to have all of the published daily clues, clipped or copied from the Pioneer Press or printed from TwinCities.com, and provide them along with the found treasure.
  • Then, the Pioneer Press also will award an additional $5,000 to the finder if he/she has a registered Commemorative Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt Medallion (only one name per medallion).

Clues for the annual Treasure Hunt will begin to appear daily in the Pioneer Press and on TwinCities.com starting Jan. 23.

As in the previous two Treasure Hunts, this is the only official registration site for the additional $5,000 prize. Medallions will be registered immediately online at time of purchase.

The Pioneer Press will recognize one winner with one prize. It’s up to the finder to share the award.

You may notice the Commemorative Medallion has both 2021 and 2022 on it. Lori Swanson, consultant for the Pioneer Press, says they were ordered correctly with 2022 in the summer. “The final proofs came back and they changed the date to 2021, thinking they were doing us a favor,” Swanson says. “I didn’t catch it until they were delivered. I tried to fix it, but the medallions are too nice to deface and none of the solutions I tried worked — hence the sticker with the hand-stamped 2022.”
