The Allison Wonderland Mock Hunt is coming! This will be the 19th official AW Mock Hunt and it will kick off on Wednesday March 14th. Clues will come out once per day at 5pm until the medallion is found, up to 12 clues total. Clues will appear on the Cooler Crew Facebook group, the PP's Treasure Hunt Discussion board, and of course the Allison Wonderland Yahoo Group. This notice and the clues may be freely copied from there to other sites.

Participants may choose to register for the hunt at a cost of $10. If a registered hunter finds the medallion, they will win the entire pot, estimated to be around $500 this year. If an unregistered hunter finds the treasure, they will get $100 and any remaining registration fees will be rolled over to another mock hunt (to be chosen by me). Registrations must be received by the release of the 4th clue. You may send the money via Paypal to AllisonWondrland@yahoo.com or you may pay in person at the kickoff event. If neither of those work, then let me know and we can make other arrangements.

The kickoff party will take place at Joseph's Grill in St. Paul at 6pm. Wednesday nights they have their pasta bar or you could order off the menu as well.

The treasure will be hidden on public land in St. Paul, ruling out the same places ruled out in the PP's Winter Carnival hunt. It will not be hidden indoors, up a tree, on a frozen surface, on a steep hill, inside something electrical, or anywhere else that would make you wonder if looking there might be a bad idea.

There will be 12 clues, but the hunt will go until the medallion is found or until outside circumstances merit calling an end to the hunt. The medallion must be returned to collect the prize.

The treasure was never officially found. Being inside a pop can, someone doing a good deed picked it up and tossed it in a recycling bin. The hunt was called of when David realized it was no longer in its original hiding place. He informed Matt to check, who confirmed it. Ed Brodie inquired about its disguise. Being told it was in a Coke Zero can, he proceeded 1 block south to the nearest recycling bin where he recovered a piece of Cooler Crew history (the famous Allison puck) that had been deemed as lost. Even though its not an official find, Ed was just proud to have been able to find it and return it

And thus we begin at the place wherein
Some murmurs once grew to a great debate.
The key to it all, just stay in St. Paul
To avoid barbarians at the gate.
Explanation:
The first thing to note here is the use of the words “murmur” and “barbarians”. Both have repeating syllables suggesting that this is a repeat park. The fact that there are two of them suggests it was the 2nd Mock Hunt in particular, or the 2002 hunt, which was in Phalen. The first two lines are describing the beginning of the “No Time For Cold Feet” movie which starts out at Phalen with people questioning what happened, and then turns into a controversy. They “key to it all” refers to the keystone in the archway of a tunnel across the road that lines up with the treasure spot. The gate referred to the fact that Phalen in a park that has a gate on the South side as well as the Gateway Trail on the north side, but you should avoid those as the treasure isn’t near either one.

Aye lads, though old news, avoid St. Andrews
That's not the sort of place you'll want to walk.
Just look for the key, it's not hard to see,
But yer gaunnae have to pick the right lock.
Explanation:
The point of this clue is to make you think “Scottish”. St. Andrews is the first golf course which is in Scotland. Staying off golf courses is old news, but it does hint that there is a golf course in the park. The last line is meant to be read in a Scottish accent which would help you realize that it isn’t saying “open the right lock”, but rather “pick the correct lake” as Lock = Loch as in the Lock Ness Monster. Only a couple of parks have a lake and a golf course, and only Phalen has more than one lake to choose from. And then the clue again mentions the keystone to highlight it’s importance.

When it comes to sports you need many courts
Spacious plots of land for each kind of ball.
Somewhere in their midst treasure doth exist
But only if you seek nothing at all.
Explanation:
This clue is telling you that it is hidden in a large park with lots of sporting fields. “Nothing at all” refers to what the medallion was hidden in, a can of Pepsi Zero Sugar.

If you want green beer, please don’t drink it here
As you’re outside the designated zone
Still some Celtic cheer to be had my dear
They say this park is Irish to the bone.
Explanation:
This clue tells you that it’s a park where alcohol is allowed, but only in areas like the picnic shelter. The treasure is hidden away from those places. It also refers to the long dead person the park is named after, Edward Phelen, who came from Ireland.

To frolic and play is just to delay
Austerity is the thing to embrace.
But while staying right, you shouldn’t lose sight
Of the youthful fun of a summer place.
Explanation:
The first part of this clue is just telling you that the medallion is hidden in a part of the park that doesn’t really contain any amenities. The second part of the clue refers to the movie “A Summer Place” which took place at a Beach House. The Beach House is visible across the lake from the hiding spot.

The sun shines all day while snow melts away.
But then the chill of night makes it refreeze
But even ice goes as it melts and flows
No matter how once great its pedigrees.
Explanation:
The medallion was hidden inside a pop can which was put in a snow bank. Over the course of the hunt, the snow was sure to melt and then refreeze again at night. Thus it was possible that by the time it was found, the can in question might actually be frozen in ice. And speaking of ice, Phalen was once home to an ice castle, giving the ice the castle was made of a certain pedigree as it were. Also, “The sun shines down” is a hint to the nearby speed limit sign which is solar powered.

This product that smokes, made by German folks
Liked in places where a Yank rarely goes.
In Mexicali and in New Dehli
But those in Lisbon tend to think it blows!
Explanation:
This clue basically refers to a car, the Volkswagon Vento, which is not sold in America, but is sold in Mexico and India. In Portugese “Vento” means “wind”. The Vento trail goes right by the treasure on the east side of the park.

To get a story that ends in glory
You'll find a little and a lot in this lore.
Continue your quest until you’ve progressed
Beyond that which is named in Chapter Four
Explanation:
The second line refers to the parking lot on the east side of the lake which is little. The last line refers to “Chapter Four” but the clue gives you no hint as to a chapter 4 of a specific book. But if one reads the line very literally, you will realize the name is in “Chapter Four” itself which might also appear as “Chapter IV”/ IV would be Ivy St. So this clue is saying start in the little parking lot and go north past Ivy St.

There’s no time to waste so proceed with haste
But go too fast and you’ll get in trouble.
If Rangers give chase, then head for a place
Down South and get down there on the double.
Explanation:
The first half of the clue refers to the solar powered speed limit sign. The second half refers to the Texas Rangers baseball team who play in Arlington, TX. The treasure is between Arlington Ave. and the speed limit sign along a double pathway.

An angel with wings will show you some things
If you take time to get down and dirty.
If you look at all you could of St. Paul
You’d find the treasure around 1:30.
Explanation:
The angel who got his wings in “It’s a Wonderful Life” was named Clarence. Clarence St. is right in line with where the treasure is, but it is on the ground in an area that is likely dirty by now. The second half of the clue suggests that if you were to put a clock over a map of St. Paul with downtown at the center, 35E as 12:00 and 94 as 3:00, then the treasure would be found right about where the hour hand would be at 1:30.

Best take this advice – stay close to the ice
But on the lake take not a single stride.
Stay upon the shore and there go explore
Until you see through to the other side.
Explanation:
This is saying that the treasure is hidden on the lake side of the pathway in line with the tunnel.

A route to Phalen take, not the park, but lake.
And begin your journey where Johnson ends.
Stick close to the shore, speed limits ignore,
And look for a pop can where the path bends.
Explanation:
If you start where Johnson meets the lake and then go along East Shore Dr., past the speed limit sign, and to the place where the path bends. Then look for a pop can.
