INTRODUCTION

They sailed the seas, and found me key.

Then those MEDdling sea dogs found me chest!

But as it was unlocked, they stood there shocked.

The heart was missing — now start your new quest!

 

With Kraken defeated, the seas receded.

Thus brought us a year of tranquility.

Along this ride, we hit a change in tides.

The heart now lies with British Nobility.

 

As a last resort, the Brethren Court,

Burned their Pieces of 8’s to a molten blend.

The Goddess of the Sea, Calypso is free!

A battle that will rage to world’s end.

The heart was missing — now start your new quest! - Tells hunters that this years Treasure Medallion is Davy Jones’ Heart.

 

A battle that will rage to world’s end - Hinting at a park or area close to the end of our search area Ramsey County (World’s end). Also battle is a vague hint at Lexington Ave that borders Rice Creek Park.  

SECRETS OF THE 8's

During the Pirate Lord Piece of 8 Hunt(s) we pulled a few stunts that could have aided you during CLT Xl! Check out the secrect hints that were given! 

 

Grain of rice = The person that freed Calypso was granted a laminated Bonus Clue Voucher for CLT Xl. On the back of this voucher was a CLT sticker with a single grain of rice behind it. The finder would need to peel the sticker off to reveal it. Hinting at Rice Creek Park. 

 

Trail of beer = At the end of each of the 9 Pirate Lord Piece of 8 Hunts we gave out our randomized rewards. One of these rewards was gift cards to local bars. If you followed the progression of the bars and their locations you would notice that the locations start in the midways area of St Paul and will progressively lead you north and end at a bar near Rice Creek Park. The locations of the bars are posted for all to see on the Piece of 8 page in bold font. 

 

Bonus Clue Voucher = The Bonus clue voucher this year actually had two written clues involved. There was a subtle clue within the chest that held Calypso that mentioned the Trail of Beer. The second Bonus clue was given at clue 6 of the CLT Xl Hunt which more clearly explained the Trail of the Beer and Rice Creek Park.

Sailing the open sea = Hints to hunters that the Heart is in a open area, in this case the open prairie.
Hero’s view = this is a anagram for “Shoreview”.
Battle = Again hinting at Lexington Ave.

Grab your armor and sword = A reference to Knight Street that borders the north side of Rice Creek Park.
Time to go to war = Another hint at Lexington Ave.
Be well equipped before you depart = This is hinting that you will likely have a long walk to the Treasure Medallion.
Hike the tree line, through the passage of pines = As you walk north from the County Road I parking lot you will pass through a grove of very tall pines. The clue directs you to continue past this point.
Better grip on his heart = A reference to Thumb Road that runs right by the County Road I parking lot.

Aha! Eureka! What a great point = These phrases explain a light bulb moment, hinting at the Edison Apartments.
A horse fast and small, can also play ball = Rice Creek Fields are home to the Moundsview Mustangs baseball team. A mustang is a small horse.
A progressive right turn = As you walk from Rice Creek Fields towards the prairie portion of the park you’ll notice an “adopt a trail” sign. This sign is sponsored by Progressive, here you should take a right and continue down the trail.

Explanation:
Consider your mower = A reference to Henry Mower Rice. Rice Creek Park is named after him. Double meaning for the large pear grassland that surrounds the Treasure Medallion.
A rake or hoe is perfect for combat = A rake or a hoe would be prefect for moving the thin layer of sand over the Treasure Medallion. Combat is another reference for Lexington Ave.
Avoid scurvy dogs = This tells hunters that the park has a Dog Park and to avoid that side of the park.

Hall of pines/Calypso’s broken hut = Walking north from the County road I parking lot you will pass through a large grove of tall pines on each side of the trail that resembles a hall of pines. To your left you will notice a short trail leading to a unfinished hut of sorts made of logs. From here you should trek north.
Past triangular course = As you continue north from the hall of pines you will come into a triangular intersection of the trails. From here keep continuing north.
Denial = This is an anagram for Aldine. Aldine Street is lined up with the Treasure Medallion.
Take a shortcut = The initial walk that this clue is describing is the long way to the Treasure Medallion. We hint that there is a much quicker route elsewhere, specifically from the Fairview Street entrance. Double meaning for the sandy trails the Treasure Medallion is hidden along as they act as a shortcut from the main trails.

Here’s a shocker = As you walk the main trail north of the hall of pines and the triangular intersection, you will notice a power box with all its loose cords sticking out to your left. This helps you know you’re heading in the right direction.
Sunken bard = This is an anagram for “sand bunker”. The Treasure Medallion was hidden within a sand bunker/dune.
Heart felt shanty = To go along with sunken bard/sand bunker. The sand bunker it was hidden in is shaped like a heart.
Drowned within the grains, it’s all in a name = This hints at the name of the park the Treasure Medallion is hidden in, Rice (grains) Creek Park. Double and more rewarding meaning for the Treasure Medallion was hidden under a light coating of sand (grains)
