The Hunt for the Golden Beer Can!
They say cold and beer go together like the Winter Carnival and treasure hunts. With that in mind, Saint Paul Brewing, in conjunction with the Winter Carnival, would like to invite you to participate in the Hunt for the Golden Beer Can.
Somewhere out on the public lands of St. Paul the Golden Beer Can lies hidden. The lucky (or is it clever?) person who finds it will win beer and cheer for a YEAR. That is to say a free pint every day Saint Paul Brewing is open as well as the added possibility of a $100 gift card each month to Can Can Wonderland for an entire year!
Come out to Saint Paul Brewing this winter to enjoy their first collaboration beer with Winter Carnival: a light, holiday spiced ale called Winter CarnivALE. Come out year round to challenge yourself (and friends!) with Tuesday night trivia. In the summer, you can bring your dog or lounge on the award winning patio and in the fall there’s nothing like some hand-crafted pizza and beer.Saint Paul Brewing is now open for lunch and dinner and serves wine and cocktails, in addition to their fantastic beer program. And that doesn’t even cover all of the mini-golf, video games, and live entertainment you’ll get at Can Can Wonderland!
But this event is more than just solving clues and digging through the snow. We want to capture the community spirit of treasure hunting with our Brews and Clues events. This hunt will kickoff Tuesday, January 2nd with a gathering at St. Paul Brewing for a clue release at 6pm.
Get together with your friends and indulge in some food and drink while you wait in line for the clue to come out. And then maybe stick around for a second round, as you try to decipher the latest cryptic text. Each pint you purchase of “Winter CarnivALE” on the day of the clue will get $1 donated back to the Winter Carnival and your name entered into a drawing for a $25 dollar gift card and other door prizes.
This delicious winter ale is available exclusively at St. Paul Brewing for the duration of the Winter Carnival festivities! A new clue (and another Brews and Clues event!) will come out each Tuesday and Thursday in January with the final clue, if needed, coming out on February 1st.
One will need a Winter Carnival button to claim Free Beer for a Year as well as the addition of $100 per month from Can Can Wonderland. The Golden Beer Can will not be hidden on private property, nor anywhere on the grounds of St. Paul Brewing. It will also not be hidden at Indian Mounds Park or Como Zoo/Conservatory.
Nor will it be indoors, up a tree, on top of a building, on a body of water/ice, on a steep hillside, in something electrical, on a golf course, on a street, or in a sewer. Must be 21 to redeem Free Beer for a Year. If the winner does not consume alcohol or is under age, a prize of similar value will be substituted from our non-alcoholic beverage program.
Hunt smart! Hunt safe! Cheers and Happy Hunting!

From all throughout our realm we call treasure hunters home to St. Paul
To invite you each, one and all to seek our golden can of beer.
On public land is where it hides. Let city limits be your guides.
Prepare to take a lot of strides if you're going to walk from here.

And thus St. Paul Brewing extends this invite to our darling friends
Where your hunting success depends on finding water of three kinds.
There's a happy end to this tale if you stay off the beaten trail.
Articles provide some detail, but not the ones that cover finds.
Explanation:
“City Limits” was a reference to Suburban Ave/Pond. “A lot of strides” just meant it wasn’t somewhere you could easily walk to from the brewery.
“Darling” was a reference to the Darling family of children in Peter Pan (Wendy, John and Michael). Wendy’s and Papa John’s were across the street and Michael Ave was also in the neighborhood. The three kinds of water were Battle Creek (Park), Suburban Pond and White Bear Lake as White Bear Avenue bordered the pond. The trail in the park was literally beaten and the treasure was just off of it, but this also referred to the fact that this area had not been used for a major treasure hunt before. “Articles” was an anagram of Talecris, the business that was right next to the hiding spot.

Even with all the time you've got, a picnic this pursuit is not.
We've picked a rather rustic spot that doesn't evoke the city.
You're not going to need a ball, no vendors there as we recall.
Really, mostly nothing at all, but with snow the hills are pretty.
Explanation:
Not evoking the city was another reference to Suburban, but mostly this clue is referencing how there are no park-like facilities here (not even a sign)! The hills being pretty references the Scenic Hills area that the park is next to with things like the Scenic Hills Shopping Center.

While our can sits on ground quite dry, a changing current is nearby.
Paddling might help you, should you try, but no need for you to get wet.
Catalogs you may disregard, and getting letters can prove hard.
But count an old-styled postcard as what people would love to get.
Explanation:
The can being on dry ground just assures hunters to stay off the pond, but also evokes the idea of water when thinking of current. A few blocks from the park is Pacific Ave, which is a one-way street. Where it turns into Suburban Ave, it becomes two-way, hence the changing current. This may seem obscure, but it is significant because this is where Google Maps mistakenly put the pin for the Suburban Pond open space. “Paddling” refers to nearby Rowe Place.
The second part of the clue points out “letters” and then says to count “an old styled postcard”. There are 19 letters in that phrase. Combine that with the mail theme and it tells you to look in the 55119 zip code which mostly just covers Battle Creek area and the Eastern edge of the city.

Since it's not easy being green, blue and purple it sits between.
Just lying in a sylvan scene, where many more trees used to grow.
If it helps you determine where, look in a park that's far from square.
Because there's a lot of land there, we can get by with no snow.
Explanation:
“Not easy being green” refers to how Suburban Pond is green on some maps and not on others. The blue and purple are Highway 61 (The Blues Highway) and 94 (The Purple Heart Trail). Where those two run closets together, this area is nestled in that corner.
The area where that pond is once used to all be a part of the City Municipal Forest, hence there used to be more trees. Suburban Pond is officially part of Battle Creek Park, a park that is far from being square and has lots of room to hide something.

Best not to take the Interstate when going to town twenty-eight.
But finding a Montville estate, puts you in the right neighborhood.
There's a definite point to start, but from that path you must depart.
As you're walking, it would be smart to gain sight of water and wood.
Explanation:
Range 22, Town 28, is an area of land that covers the bottom of St. Paul from Burns Ave southward. 94 is not a part of it and 35E leads the other direction. Montville was a neighborhood that included the A, B and C streets at the South end of White Bear Ave. These were not right by the pond but gave you the neighborhood. The starting “point” could either be Point Douglas or the Terra Point apartments. Both could put you in the line of the right vicinity, but to get to the pond from there you would have to get off the path. And then it reminds you that you are looking for trees near water.

You want to get this hunt begun? Look everywhere under the sun.
This engagement will not be won until your mark you plainly see.
Locating the place where it sits, can take a fair amount of wits.
Surely you didn't think that it's elementary as can be?
Explanation:
“Under the sun” refers to looking somewhere south of the Sun Ray shopping center although some people also took it to mean South of the BP logo at the gas station across the street. “Engagement will not be won” is meant to suggest combat and hence Battle Creek. The mark you could see was the Target sign in the distance from the hiding spot. “Elementary” suggested the Battle Creek Elementary School and/or the ABC streets, both of which were nearby, but it was NOT at those areas.

If no success after seven times, maybe nine or even ten?
Surely you'll hop on it by then! We think the assumption is fair.
But if it seems like up is down, and you're running all over town,
The best way to avoid a frown is to keep both eyes over there.
Explanation:
Hopping on and “fair” are meant to make you think of a bus, but which bus? “Seven times maybe nine or even ten” would give you 63 and 70. One bus runs along Suburban Ave and the other runs just South of the Pond along lower Afton, framing the search area pretty well. “Up is down” tells you that Upper Afton is to the South of the hiding spot. “Both eyes” refers to the Driip IV, which is across Suburban Ave from the pond. It’s nearby, but you want to keep it “over there” as it is not *that* near. Also, if you look at that building on Google Street view, it still shows as being a dentistry business that is no longer there.

In the distance the lion roars thrice while a nearby road appears twice.
All the ladies seem to be nice below the house of Cervantes.
Beauty and elegance guide you in a spot with a proper view
While a dead end gives you a clue to find more than diamantes.
Explanation:
The MGM lion always roared three times at the start of any MGM movie, and the MGM liquor sign is visible from the hiding spot. Burns Ave is found on both the left side and the right side of the park. Cervantes was a famous Spanish writer, so his house would be a “Casa”. That is also the name of the apartment building that looms above the hiding spot. Hazel, Kim and Faye are streets near the hiding spot. “Beauty and elegance” defines “grace” as the steeple of Grace Lutheran Church, which is also visible from the spot. Hazel Street dead ends very near the hiding spot.

As time grows short and ticks away, maybe go twenty four a day.
Crossing bridges leads you astray so just keep on going around.
As you ponder where it might hide, you can use this rule as a guide.
No more than ten feet to the side a tree can most surely be found.
Explanation:
24 refers to the number of the fire station across the street from the pond. It’s possible some people might have been thinking it was at the part of Battle Creek just to the South. This steers them away by saying there are no bridges and the path goes in a circle. “Ponder” suggests the pond. And it also tells them it will be near a tree and not in an open space.

Outside the city? Well not quite. It may seem nutty, but it’s right.
Be positive and you just might find yourself getting very hot.
And after passing through the glade, where there was a choice to be made,
Maybe you should have stopped and stayed because really, that was the spot.
Explanation:
“Outside the City” refers to Suburban Ave/Pond. “Nutty” refers to nearby Hazel Street. “Be positive” refers to Talecris Plasma Center and “getting very hot” is Burns Ave, all things right near the hiding spot. There is a spot in the path near those things where it splits and that is where the treasure was.
