Treasure found

Kirsten Faurie | Times

Tanya Hatch (far right) found the 2015 treasure with help from her mother, Margo, and fiancé, Glenn.

The 26th Annual Kanabec County Treasure Hunt ended Aug. 3 when Tanya Hatch found and brought in the hidden treasure hunt medallion, winning her the $1,000 prize. The prize was hidden halfway under a piece of tree bark in the brush at the Ann River public boat access just south of Mora.

She and her family make a tradition of searching for the treasure each year, and even won a previous year.

Sponsored by local businesses, the treasure hunt begins with the hiding of a treasure hunt medallion somewhere in Kanabec County on public property.

The medallion is hidden where it can be found without hunters needing to dig or use any tools.

Then 12 clues where to find the treasure are released, once per day until someone finds the medallion and brings it to Kanabec Publications to claim their prize.

The prize for finding the hidden medallion is $1,000 if the hunter purchased a 2015 treasure hunt medallion; the prize is only $500 if the hunter did not purchase a medallion.

This year the treasure hunt theme was Las Vegas gambling.

If you’re still looking, go to the public landing on Ann River on Hwy. 65. Off to the right of the big open area where the big piles of dirt are, you’ll find a path leading alongside the river. Go straight down the path (away from the bridge) about 15 feet. Off to the left under the trees and under a piece of tree bark the treasure will be found.
