Contest Details and Rules:

Medallion Hunt clues will be published on this web site, on the City of North Saint Paul web site, and at numerous local businesses beginning at 8:00 am on Monday, February 11, 2008.  A new clue will appear daily by 8:00 am through Friday, February 15, 2008, unless the medallion is found prior to that date. Read the daily clues to search for the medallion hidden on public land in North Saint Paul.

If you find the medallion, please promptly return it to the North Saint Paul City Hall located at 2400 Margaret Street. The prize for finding the medallion is $200 in Medallion Dollars, and will be awarded to the winner on Friday, February 15, 2008 during the Snow Frolics Fling which will be held at the American Legion Post #39 from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm.

An additional $200 in Medallion Dollars will be awarded to the finder if he/she is a registered 2008 Snow Frolics Button owner and has mailed an official entry form postmarked by Monday, February 11, 2008. After this date, up to and including Thursday, February 14, 2008, or until the medallion is found, registration cards will be picked up daily from the local businesses that are selling buttons so that they can all be entered into the database and officially registered.

The hunt for the medallion ends at 5:00 pm on Friday, February 15, 2008. If the medallion has not been found by that time, the money that was to be awarded will be given away in a drawing using the registered button cards.

This year we look for the little man made of metal
Who won’t melt when the weather finally mellows.
Where he may be, most don’t know,
But this year please leave your shovel at home!
Search where you think this twister might lead,
And enjoy your time in the commons!
Explanation:
The “little man made of metal” is the description of the medallion. “Enjoy your time in the commons” let’s the searcher know that the medallion is in a park. There is also one more hint in this clue that does not become apparent until Clue #2 and that is the line “Where he may be” the “B” referring to Park B which is what Hause Park was called before it was officially named. “Twister” is definitely a word you should ponder! Hopefully after some twists and turns, it will bring you back to the merry-go-round at Hause Park!

“Every inch of this land should be well guarded”
Our founder once said, of the lay of the land.
His generosity was great and three sites evolved
To bring our village above and beyond them all.
Explanation:
The first line is a two-fold clue. The quote was made by Henry Castle regarding parkland in North Saint Paul. The three sites that evolved were parkland that was set aside for three parks. Before they were officially named, they were referred to as Parks A, B and C. Hause Park was Park B, (this information takes you back to the second line of clue number 1 “Where he might be”.) The first line also should lead you to Walter HAUSE, an early police chief (in the 1920’s) for the Village of North Saint Paul – his job – to guard the town well.

The Captain had three great sons
One of which is more apparent to some.
What does this mean as you scratch your head?
Present day overlaps with history, it is said.
Explanation:
This clue references the Captain – who is Henry Castle. It also references his three sons, Harry, James and Charles. The more apparent one to the community is CHARLES, with a street named after him. The clue lets you know that the park is on Charles Street.

Few cars were around at the time
When you plowed our roads with a horse and “V” plow
Did you ever think the result of your place in honor
Would evolve into a hat trick or a windmill?
Explanation:
This clue references plowing the roads with a “V” plow. This task was done by Henry Flaspeter and Walter HAUSE back in 1924. The place of honor refers to the park being named after Walter Hause, and the hat trick and windmill refer to hockey and softball respectively – two sports that you can participate in at HAUSE Park.

Charles, hockey, softball and plows.
Is our little man still unfound?
Let’s stop going round and round
Day five is here and he must be found!
Explanation:
Earlier clues are spelled out here with the first line of the clue – Charles Street, Hockey rink, Softball field, and the snow plow – pulled by Walter HAUSE. The “round and round” reference points you to the fact that the medallion is at the merry-go-round – a follow up to the “twister” reference in the very first clue.
