With the Solstice nearly here, it’s time once more,
For Summerfest Medallion hunters, both novice and hard core.

The City’s heavy lifting in the past was the key,
This year changes are in place with a new 501 (C)3.

Let us introduce you, if we may,
To the new organization that stepped in to, literally, save the day!

The Oakdale Summerfest Community Organization, OSCO, will lead Summerfest ahead,
Now the little plastic disk, you ask, may require off the path you tread.
Explanation:
Clue number 1 welcomes all ages and skill sets to participate in this fun community event. Whether a first-time hunter or you have been part of this event for 20+ years, it’s a great way to put your thinking caps on and get out and explore all the wonderful Oakdale community has to offer. Because of changes at the State level, the City of Oakdale is now limited in terms of their ability to organize and fund Summerfest. Fortunately, a small group of volunteers stepped in and stepped up to save this wonderful summer city event. Finally, the last sentence offers some insight that the medallion is hidden off of some path.

As in years past, the rules were not postulated on a whim,
Locating the prized piece will not require you to climb, dig or swim.

The energy you’ll need to crack this clue-master is high,
Many a feet will stroll unknowingly by.

Chicago & Northwestern rolls well to the south.
From the perch where it rests, there’s now sign of a drouth.
Explanation:
Clue number 2 is a perennial reminder that it is not necessary to climb, dig or swim in order to find the medallion. “Many a feet will stroll unknowingly by” refers to the medallion hiding location just off of a walking path. Knowing the Chicago & Northwestern (one of the companies that many years ago owned the rail line that bisects the city) line is south of the location directs hunters to search only north of the rail line, and in fact, well to the north. The last sentence notifies searchers that the medallion is located near a water source: “no sign of a drouth”.

Saturday at 8:00 the 5k will begin,
And now some accolades, much to his chagrin.

Paths near the park, what a beautiful route,
For a run or a walk to get out and about.

Volunteer of the Year, recognition he avoids,
Remember the hunt rules; there’s no need to destroy.

Sir Bill Burns, yes, when he bleeds it’s Oakdale Green,
Now finding the 2023 disk requires a new level of unforeseen.
Explanation:
Clue number 3 begins with a little plug for the Nature Preserve 5k. If you have not yet registered, you are welcome and encouraged to participate. Same day/race day registration begins at 7:00am on Saturday, June 24th at the Discovery Center. This clue also recognizes a person who has given an incredible amount of his time and talent over many years to truly make the City of Oakdale a better place to live, work and play. Bill Burns is a past president of the Oakdale Business and Professional Association which he lead the transition from the OBPA to the now, OACC: Oakdale Area Chamber of Commerce. He has, and continues to, participate on various commissions for the city and is an active volunteer for the Holiday Helping Hands, Winterfest, Summerfest and numerous other events and capacities. In terms of the clue itself, the reference to the 5k suggests the medallion may be in (or near) Oakdale Nature Preserve. The reference to running and walking further points in the direction of Oakdale Nature Preserve. These clues are simply meant to throw searchers a bit off course. The last sentence referencing a new level of unforeseen is an indication that while easy to find, in general, the specific location of the plastic disk will take some real detective work.

Slow down, you move too fast,
You got to make this Summerfest last.

This bridge less one nine,
So peacefully placed but not near a pine

Bibs he wore and birds he admired,
The soft glow of a man who could keep you inspired.
Explanation:
Clue number 4 starts with a classic Simon and Garfunkel song that most would know as “Feelin’ Groovy”. The actual name of the song is the 59th Street Bridge Song. “This bridge” the 59th Street Bridge, “less one nine” means 59 minus 19 and that equals 40. 40 refers to 40th Street. Once on 40th Street, near Gretchen Lane and one of the south entrances to Oakdale Nature Preserve, there is a monument in honor of Joe Zieminski. Joe was known for his love of birds. So much so, he affectionately became known as “The Birdman Of Oakdale”. While Joe’s monument is right next to the Oakdale Nature Preserve sign, another key part of this clue are the words “soft glow” or, specifically “glow”. Glow is a synonym for the word Lustre. Across the street from Joe’s monument the word Lustre is dialing hunters in on the more precise location of the medallion.

Carefully you search, please don’t use it to make fire,
Dress for crawling on hands and knees is appropriate attire.

The Lustre you see won’t shine through the bark,
So innocently it’s hidden and barely a mark.

Three inches round and sixteen inches long
Everything so natural it just seems to belong.

Peeling the onion won’t bring tears to your eyes,
Inside the two-inch hole find the little plastic prize!!

Thank you, OSCO, you made Summerfest a thrill,
And the Medallion Hunt this year took every ounce of skill.

With bated breath we look forward to next year,
A chance once again to seek the cherished little sphere.
Explanation:
Clue number 5 leads with a note to not use it to make fire. This line references the fact the medallion this year is hidden inside a wood log. The word Lustre now clearly identifies Oakwood Lustre Park on 40th Street across from the Joe Zieminski Monument as the exact location of the medallion. Furthermore, the exact dimensions of the log that was placed near the base of a group of trees with other fallen and rotting logs is provided: 16 inches long by 3 inches in diameter. It’s pretty obvious this log does not belong as it is machine cut on both ends. Once a hunter recognizes this log does not belong here the next clue about the onion is also very helpful. From the outside of the log, there is no evidence of the little plastic disk. Peeling the onion won’t bring tears to your eyes is a metaphor for peeling the bark off the log. The original bark fell off the log and had been glued back on to the log. Under that bark is a small hole containing the medallion.
