Have you ever remarked that you “haven’t a clue”?

Well, throw that phrase out the window, because there’ll be clues for you the week of Feb. 5-11, when the Eden Prairie Community Foundation, Rustica Bakery and Café, and Kowalski’s Eden Prairie Market team to bring you the annual Sheldon’s Wrench treasure hunt.

With clues posted at the Eden Prairie Rustica shop in the historic Smith-Douglas-More House at 3 p.m. every day that week, residents young and old will be invited to hunt Eden Prairie parks for Sheldon Smith’s wrench that, according to legend, was lost 136 years ago.

All of the clues will reference Eden Prairie history, with previous days’ clues posted on the Rustica Eden Prairie Facebook page. Residents participating in the hunt are asked to follow all City of Eden Prairie geocaching guidelines so that the treasure hunt is safe, fun, and damage-free.

Whoever finds the hidden wrench will win $500 if they have purchased a $5 set of event buttons and filled out the registration. No button? Then the prize is $100. Colorful buttons are on sale at Rustica Bakery and Café at 8107 Eden Prairie Road and at Kowalski’s Eden Prairie Market at the Prairie Villager Mall, corner of Highway 5 and County Road 4.

The Foundation is proud to collaborate with Rustica and Kowalski’s to bring you one of Eden Prairie’s signature winter events. The hunt for Sheldon’s wrench has taken place the last eight years, and has brought lots of attention to the historic Smith-Douglas-More House where Sheldon, an early town officer, once lived.

If you appreciate Eden Prairie history, we think you’ll also appreciate the Eden Prairie Community Foundation. After all, more than a few of the Foundation’s 500-plus grants awarded over the last 36 years have helped preserve and call attention to Eden Prairie’s rich history.

On this topic, we are not “clueless.”

Off to hide the wrench! Join us for the Sheldon's Wrench Treasure Hunt beginning February 5th. Buy a button pack and win $500! Sponsored by Rustica Eden Prairie, the Eden Prairie Community Foundation and Kowalski's Eden Prairie Market.

Introduction to the hunt:

Ol' Shel awoke with an 'ache
Half past noon for pete's sake!
Her rolled out of bed feeling quite the fool
He realized he'd misplaced one of his tools!
The night before, Shel'd been gallivanting about,
He must have lost it while he was out!
He'd replay his jaunt through the city with care
And try to remember where the wrench was out there.
Help Sheldon Smith for another year,
bring him his wrench and watch us all cheer!

Clue:

The evening was misty, when supplies ran low
My buddies and me were heading towards Franlo!
That's where we met a strange looking fellow
He was standing by something with yellow.
Explanation:
There were no clues in the introduction other than to introduce the fictitious tale that Sheldon had been out on the town the night before and that the clues would be him recounting his night out.

Clue 1 sends everyone straight to Franlo. This tells you that it probably isn't at Franlo (who would tell you the park in clue 1!), introduces the starting point of the journey, as well as tells you about the yellow baseball fence that is within sight of the actual wrench hiding spot at Miller Park.

If gold is your treasure, Silver or Engel would do
Homeward we headed, the fellows us few.
We passed by a many places for sport
Including a tennis and basketball court.
Explanation:
Clue 2 sends you to Homeward Hills which further clues the concept of traveling across southern Eden Prairie. Miller Park also has a tennis and basketball court.

The night it was Starry on a cross country ski
The fellow was Jonas and we went on a spree!
At Cummins we ate til we had our fill
But what I remember was at the top of the hill...
Explanation:
Clue 3 continues to Staring Lake Park. This clue hints at a hill and a warming house. Miller Park has a warming house by the hockey rink.

We joined up with Miller at his Spring for a drink
At this point in our journey I must really think.
We sang as we went up the hills that we climbed
I remember the tune but can't remember the rhyme...
Explanation:
Clue 4 sends us to Miller-Fredricks Spring which is the first mention of Miller as the hiding spot. Hill gets another mention to hint the wrench will be on top of a hill.

O'er and through the Dell we did travel,
At this point our group began to unravel.
The Path it was Stable which did us some good
The area we played had been cleared from the wood.
Explanation:
Clue 5 sends us to Crestwood Park, a newer park that has not been mentioned in clues before. Besides continuing the journey concept the only clue was the park name itself. “Wood Crest” was supposed to hint at the curved edge of woods that the wrench was hidden in. I also thought some would sense the idea of the journey and try to jump ahead a few parks!

At this point we headed for Old Jacques Barn
He built us a fire which was really quite warm
Some chickens got out and caused quite a scene,
We rounded up most, but lost nine through thirteen.
Explanation:
Clue 6 sends us to Riley Park. The sign at Miller Park says “Fields 9-13” so if you had suspicions about the park, then you would know for sure you were on the right track. On the sign at Shoreline, there is an arrow next to “Fields 9-13” that point right to the wrench!

Ok, I remember, its all coming in clear,
The places, the faces, put it quite near!
With Miller I was at the crest of the wood
a foot or two in is right where I stood.
A sign at Shoreline, an arrow will aim,
not just to play, but to the treasure you claim!
Explanation:
Clue 7 (which was not published!) basically spells out how to line up the sign to find the wrench!
It should also be noted that the Nienhuis family pointed out that the route itself was the shape of a wrench! This was not intended! A great coincidence!
