Treasure Hunt Details and Rules:

 

  • Clues will be released daily at www.wintercarnival.8m.com starting on Sunday, November 8, 2015.
  • Clues will be released at random times. In the afternoons between 2 PM and 5 PM and in the mornings between 6 AM and 9 AM.
  • There will be a total of 12 clues and the hunt will end when the medallion is found or at 5:00 PM on Saturday, November 14, 2015. There will one clue on Sunday afternoon, two clues daily Monday through Friday and the final clue on Saturday morning.
  • If the medallion not found by 5:00 PM on Saturday, November 14, 2015, the prize money will be added to a future hunt’s prize.
  • Treasure Hunt Headquarters will award the finder a $200 prize, if he or she owns a copy of Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt History. A $50 bonus will be given to the finder if they have a personally autographed copy of the book. If the finder does not have a copy of Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt History, a prize of $100 will be awarded. Only one finder will be recognized as the winner.
  • Copies of Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt History are available for purchase at a discounted rate during the hunt by sending $15 to medhunter@hotmail.com using the “Send money to friends and family” option. Please include your full name and “2015 Fall Hunt” in the comments and I will reserve a book for you and make arrangements to get it delivered to you. Please add $3 if you want the book mailed to you.
  • The medallion will be hidden on public land in Ramsey County.
  • Treasure Hunt Headquarters reserves the right to discontinue the treasure hunt at any time if public property is destroyed or people are hunting on private property.
  • The medallion will not be on or in a body of water, on top of a building, up a tree, on a steep cliff, underground, indoors, inside anything electrical or something that is locked. Be safe. Search, don't destroy.
  • Payment of the prize is contingent on the return of the medallion. Please follow the directions on the medallion to claim your prize. Please leave a message if the phone is not answered. DO NOT WAIT TO NOTIFY TREASURE HUNT HEADQUARTERS IF YOU FIND THE MEDALLION.
  • A wrap-up party is being planned for Saturday, November 14, 2015. Finder will be awarded his or her prize if present. Further details at a later date.

Straight to the point, please don’t be misled
In translating the sign, what I get is “trees ahead”
And when you have found the proper place
You can avoid searching in the open space
Explanation:
Straight to the point is telling you that we are giving you the park name in the first clue. “I get is trees ahead” anagrams to Eastside Heritage. It also tells you that it is not located in the open space of the park and hints that it is hidden in part of a tree.

No trespassing on your neighbor’s lawn
We’ll repeat this message as we go along
And also remember to follow posted rules
Without any snow, you should need no tools
Explanation:
The “No trepassing” and repeat is a reference to the many “No Trepassing” signs along the path on the north side of the park. Follow the posted rules was a referring the the offical rules posted at www.wintercarnival.8m.com which explained the 3 hour time frame for clue release. The clues were often released much earlier than 9 AM and 5 PM at Treasure Hunt Headquarters, but were put on Facebook closer to 9 and 5. Hinted at the treasure being on the ground as snow would have made it more difficult to find without tools..

Bright as can be, you study each clue
It’s all right there, sitting in front of you
Double the value of the first and the last
Getting just one from the two you’ve passed
Explanation:
The only thing this clue was referring to is the word BRIDGE. The first two letters of the first and last line and the first letter of the second and third line spell BRIDGE. The Neid Lane bridge over the trail was very near the medallion location.

Well, well, well, what is that I see
A source of water in the vicinity
Now branch out into the unknown
For the trails carry a history of their own
Explanation:
The “Well, well, well” and “source of water” refer to nearby Wells Street. Branch is a hint at what the medallion was hidden in and the unknown refers to the fact that the medallion has never been hidden in Eastside Heritage Park. The “trails carry a history of their own” are words off one of the history plaques located in the park.

Canada has given the world a couple of greats
Who glided on the ice wearing a pair of skates
A number is key to the location of our coveted prize
A Great or Magnificent One appears before your eyes
Explanation:
The clue references Wayne Gretsky (The Great One, No. 99) and Mario Lemieux (The Magnificent One, No. 66), both hockey players from Canada. The key to this clue was a valve cover with the word “CANADA” on the side of the pipe and the number 66 or 99 (depending on which side of it you are standing) stamped into the top which was very near the treasure location.

A scrambled reference will appear to help get you there
Explanation:
This clue had dual meaning. The first was that “Mappy doesn’t know” referenced the fact that Eastside Heritage Park is not included in the Treasure Hunter’s Guide. The second, more valuable meaning, was that if you scanned the “quick reference” (dots to form a square) on the back of your Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt History book, it would bring you to a web page with the attached photo clue from which you could decipher the name of the park.

Out on the hunt? Are you on the right trail?
You can sit and ponder or wait for the rail
Things change with time, and often too fast

Explanation:
Refers to the main trail going through the park which is on the right-of-way designated for future light rail transit. The area was also where Phalen Creek once flowed towards the Mississippi River. A history plaque within the park references canoeists in the early 1900s.

Yet by all others aspects, it is in its infancy

Explanation:
Eastside Heritage Park is a newly developed park initially starting to take shape in 2009. The area within and around the park has quite a history. The various panels within in the park explain it’s history and the history of the East Side. The words “haven’t passed our test” and “feelin’ were hinting at the word “Phalen”. Phalen Boulevard runs on the south side of the park.

If you are near the Land of Sky Blue Water

Grains of time are what you should follow
And by all means, stay out of the hollow
Explanation:
The “Land of Sky Blue Water” was the slogan of nearby Hamm’s Brewery whose smokestack is visible from the treasure site. The “Grains of time” was reference to the grain silos which were located at the site of the park into the 1990s. “Stay out of the hollow” had a double meaning. The first was to stay out of nearby Swede Hollow and the second was to stay out of the “small valley” (which is Merriam Webster’s definition of hollow) leading you to higher ground.

Ed intended to find a good place to dine
The ends in sight, the message sublime
Now hop in your car, with tokens in hand
Log time in this fun zone, it’s on native land
Explanation:
“Ed in” and “dine” and the “ends in sight” refers to nearby Neid Lane. The words “car” and “zone” were a hint at the word “autozone” painted on the building east of the site. “Tokens” and “fun” was a reference to an arcade. Arcade street is east of the area. The word “log” was a hint to the fact that the medallion was hidden in what looked like a small log. “This fun zone” should have limited your search to the area between Neid and Arcade which hasn’t been mowed (native).

Explanation:
Locates the medallion along the ridge line between two manhole covers (access points to storm sewer) and the Neid Lane bridge.

Head on out to Eastside Heritage Park
Search for wood with painted on bark
At the south end of the bridge head east
Now go halfway to the manholes at least

As you walk along the edge of cut grass
Lies a cookie wrapper you should not pass
Now head into the native grass a few feet
Sandwiched in wood, the hunt is complete
