An early pioneer lends a hand to our mystery
Best to search for a place of significant history
It’s best to do your research before you embark
Find a place that is full of it, outside of the park
Explanation:
Gervais Mill Park is a place of significant history named after pioneer, Benjamin Gervais, who settled with his family on this land and opened a grist mill. Benjamin was both a founding pioneer for St. Paul and Little Canada. The place full of history is the Little Canada History Center located next to the park and City Hall. If you didn’t stop out to see the original grist stone during the hunt, please check it out on display outside the history center.

Keep up your strength, we’ll test your mettle
For the misaligned name is not ours to settle
The river to the North is located far from here
The old path to take was set by the early pioneer
Explanation:
The words “Keep and mettle” were a subliminal message for the word kettle. The clue was referring to the “Old Kettle River Road” traveled by the pioneers which was located where the current Little Canada Road is located which was originally an old Indian trail. The Kettle River is located some 80+ miles from here.

Places to rest and to enjoy the island view
Maybe even some spots to cast a line or two
With trails abound that lead to a place serene
A bridge you must cross to get to the right scene
Scrambled Clue:
The place to rest was the nearby bench overlooking a very small island in the pond. The places to “cast a line or two” are the nearly identical fishing piers located in the two ponds. The “place serene” was the quiet corner of the park with only grass trails nearby. It did not matter which parking lot you parked in, you would have to cross a bridge to get to the right area of the park.

As you thrash about and enjoy time in this park
Find a treasured place to rest before you embark
Plants abound with many of them even identified
Search for the weathered and worn to be satisfied
Explanation:
The words “time in this park” and “treasured” are located on the dedication plaque on the bench near the medallion location. Along the paths throughout the park are many signs identifying the various plants. “Weathered and worn” was referring to the piece of wood that concealed the medallion. Bonus points to anyone who noticed the trashing machine located in the backyard of 2750 Noel Drive.

Are things getting more murky? Have no fear
For things will settle out and become more clear
It’s a process that it goes through heading to and fro
Improving things beyond here, just follow the flow
Explanation:
The whole verse is about the Gervais Mill Ponds built to clean storm water runoff prior to it entering Gervais Lake. If you follow its flow you get Gervais Lake also named after Benjamin Gervais. There are two signs about the process, one located on each side of the park.

Survey the land, making sure to get your bearing
Branch off, search for a spot with a similar pairing
Are you getting close? Are you at the right plot?
It is best to rotate to enter at a ten degrees trot
Explanation:
The words “Branch off” and “similar pairing” are referring to two trees near the treasure location that have been trimmed leaving about a twenty foot tall tree with no branches. The words “ten degrees trot” anagrams to Edgerton Street which runs adjacent to the park and the closest parking lot to the treasure.

Back in the day this was in Wisconsin territory
It just adds to the history and more to the story
So he settled his family and was sitting pretty
And then he decided to found this le petit city
Explanation:
“Wisconsin territory” and “history and more to the story” are referring to the plaque located near the grist mill site and parking lot off Noel Drive. Benjamin, his wife Genevieve and their eight children settled along the creek. Benjamin was the founder of Little (Le Petit) Canada. The city’s official newsletter is called “Le Petit Canadien”.

With giants standing tall and oh most stately
Except for a couple truncated ever so greatly
Towering near you with a view of water on high
A reminder of birth on Christmas is also nearby
Explanation:
The “giants standing tall” are referring to the large cottonwood trees in the area and the “truncated ever so greatly” is referring to the two trees that have been trimmed to nothing more than very tall stumps. It also refers to the water tower that is visible from the treasure location. “Birth on Christmas” is referring to the word “Noel”. Noel Drive is the closest street to the treasure location.

Just milling around the park can be such a grind
Avoiding an early flour bed could bring piece of mind
If you are standing on the spot, here’s an important clue
The name of a city, through branches and trees, is in view

If searching down trees and bark only brings frustration
Have a seat, enjoy the view and ponder a better location
For the area near you, left behind, has much less fodder
Into the woods, lay the goods, now you are getting hotter
Explanation:
“Milling around, grind and flour bed” are hinting at the grist mill and reminding you to avoid that area of the park. The last two lines are referring to the fact that when standing at the treasure location, you can see the “Little Canada” on the water tower through a visible opening through the branches of trees. The second verse states to avoid the down trees and bark. The words “left behind”, tell you to look in an area in the woods over your left shoulder if you are sitting on the bench.

From Gracie’s bench towards beheaded trees
For a total of 20 paces in line and then just freeze
Turn 90 degrees and go 10 paces into the woods
For under a few leaves you should locate the goods

A piece of weathered wood laying on the ground
With a carved pocket where the medallion is bound
Now if you look up and peer through the trees
The words “Little Canada” should be seen with ease

We hope you enjoyed this Gervais Mill Park jaunt
It’s time to start searching for “The D and D Haunt”
Best of luck on your search for this new treasure
Thank you from TH HQ, it’s been our pleasure

Bonus Clue:

Each Lucky Duck held a code that you could see
Only the ones containing numbers to this hunt are key
For each one take the letter from the numbered spot
Take those letters to form words, you’re getting hot

From each month get two words that lead to a park
You’ll be way ahead of the others and out of the dark
With these ten significant words in their monthly pairs
Should lead you to the correct park as one compares
Explanation:
Pinpoints the treasure location and tells treasure hunters to look for a piece of weather wood. It also reminds hunters of the “D and D Haunt” treasure hunt that starts today. Thanks for taking part in the Treasure Hunt Headquarters Fall Hunt 2022. I hope you enjoyed the hunt and good luck in the search for the D and D treasure.

That unique piece of wood was harvested from Harriet Island during one of the TC Treasure token hunts back in 2019.

Bonus Clue:

Each Lucky Duck had a code and those codes were listed at the end of each month’s hunt. If you took the letter from the numbered position for each code you got a group of letters which could be unscrambled into two words.
The following groups of words were used: “Water Tower”, “City Hall”, “Maple Leaf”, “Twin Piers”, and “Grist Mill”. These words should have named the park for the treasure hunters who received the bonus clue.
