MEDALLION HUNT   —   Some things you should know:

The 2015 Winterfest Medallion is made of clear acrylic and is 3 1/2  inches in diameter and 1/2 inch thick.  It has unique markings and cannot be duplicated.  Any forgeries will be easily identifiable.  Furthermore, when the medallion is submitted, we will ask you specifically where it was found.

The Winterfest 2014 Medallion was hidden near the seventh bridge on Seven Bridges Road at Amity Park. The Winterfest 2013 medallion was hidden at Keenes Creek Park in Hermantown.  The Winterfest 2012 medallion was hidden near a trail at Hartley Nature Center.  The Winterfest 2011 medallion was hidden at Billings Park in Superior near the public boat landing.  The 2010 medallion was hidden at Enger Park in Duluth near the Peace Bell.  The 2009 medallion was hidden at Lief Erikson Park.

The winner of the medallion hunt must be at least 18 years of age or older.  However, anyone under the age of 18 may search as long as an adult claims the prize and assumes responsibility for any taxes associated with winning.

The medallion is hidden outdoors on public property somewhere in Douglas or St. Louis Counties.  No trespassing on private property will be at all necessary.

It will be hidden above ground.  However, it is possible the medallion will be buried by snow or slightly covered by loose natural or artificial materials.

No climbing or scaling  will be required.

The medallion is not hidden within 10 feet of any body of water.

If property is being damaged, we reserve the right to cancel the contest entirely.

Happy Hunting!!!!!!!

Twenty figures are strolling
Back to back they do trek
From here, veer northwest
In a place like Quebec
Explanation:
There was a map sign posted a few hundred yards from the hidden medallion along the path that included 19 or20 walking stick figures walking along a path. I initially counted twenty – but on closer examination, it appears to be only 19. Still, several medallion searchers deciphered the clue correctly. From that sign, the path veers slightly northwest. The Superior Municipal Forest is a boreal forest (conifers and hardwood, including white and red pine, balsam, cedar, black spruce, white birch, and aspen) - normally only found just south of the Arctic Circle. However, the cool Lake Superior air has created conditions for a boreal to grow in Superior. There is a large boreal forest in Quebec, Canada.

We’ve settled on a image
And yes the pic’s been cropped
It’s posted on the website early
It’s taken by where the disc’s been dropped.

Explanation:
This is a cropped picture of the arches that mark the beginning of the Millennium Trail. It is the tips of two seagulls in the logoed image.

One thing that is certain
It’s a hunt for all ages
From the prose and the verses
Lifted right off the pages
Explanation:
This is a two part clue. “..hunt for all ages..” is a hint toward “Millennium”.

The …”prose and versus lifted right off the pages” is a clue about the previously mentioned informational signs that all contain a verse or quote from a famous author, naturalist or poet.

(All these lines to be read by Superior mayor Bruce Hagen)

Sing praises to the City of Proctor
We can see you across the bay
You’re beautiful perched on the hill
With Jet Planes and Railway.

And Hermantown ….with Rolling Hills
The Proud Home of the Hawks
We really do admire you
Among finest of the flock.

And here’s the Truth
O Grand Duluth
You’re a beacon at the bay
Spacious, Progressive, Caring and Kind.

Superb for work and play
It’s true you’re all our closest friends
With so much to admire
The people are what make you great.

An ethic that never tires
To very few that we compare
will you ever be inferior……
Except of course,…… across the river
Because ………….. We ….are Superior.

Explanation:
This clue simply means the medallion is hidden in Superior. Interestingly, the Mayor changed some of the language and may have threw a few people off. Sorry – but he’s the mayor.

In a wooded area that is quite rare
Because of the trees and the fresh lake air
But if you’re digging around trees, we need to declare
That will only ensure, you will not get your share
Explanation:
This is another clue leading you to a boreal forest. It also states that the medallion will not be hidden at the base of a tree which has been a popular place for hunters to look in the past

It is not really wood
It is 46 paces
It’s nearby, so you should
search in all nearby places
Explanation:
This is a clue about the walking bridge – which by my stride – was 46 paces. The medallion is hidden perhaps 50 to 100 feet away – almost directly across the path from the sign pictured here. It was placed a few inches to the left of a rotted log stretching flat under a layer of leaves. The medallion was also tucked under a layer of leaves – but according the finder, was found out in the open.
